320,000 TEU capacity for Container Terminal Enns

Investments into modernisation and expansion of the CTE to start before the end of 2014; new operating company to take over the terminal as of 1 April 2015

Kaindl Invest (Salzburg) and Deutsche Bahn prepare to expand and modernise the Container Terminal Enns (CTE) from November, as the regional government of Upper Austria has approved it and the lease contract was signed last week. The new operating company formed by Kaindl Invest (51%) and DB Mobility Logistics AG (49%) will start operation as a neutral provider as of 1 April 2015.

The aim is to expand the intermodal transport business at the site and establish regular rail services to the seaports and business centers in the north, south and west of Europe. With the investment of EUR 17 million, the facility is modernised and expanded. Thus a high performance infrastructure will be available on a site with great potential. Managing Directors of the CTE are Otto Hawlicek (Kaindl) and Michael Heinemann (DB Intermodal Services), both experts for combined transport.

M. Kaindl KG provides part of their land for the expansion of CTE. „The total area of approximately 160,000 m² is designed for 320,000 TEU per year, which represents an increase of around 30 per cent compared to the current capacity,“ said Konrad Grünwald, CEO of M.Kaindl KG, at a press conference. The new facilities are to be integrated in regular operation in the fall of 2015.

In addition to expanding, the focus is on the modernisation of existing facilities. This infrastructure is brought technically and logistically to date and will increase the efficiency of the terminal. The extension of the CTE connects directly to the existing tracks. Five new tracks will be built with 700 meters in length in addition to the four existing tracks. For the handling of containers 6,300 meters of track will be available.

Two additional gantry cranes are built, so that three cranes can be used to lift the container. The facilities are also technically brought up to date, for example, by a complete electrical surge of the supply rails, which allows operation with electric locomotives.
