5.5% decrease in freight transport volume on the Danube in 2014

Statistics Austria (Vienna) records declines in international goods receipt and transit in Austrian inland shipping in the year 2014

According to calculations of Statistics Austria a total of 10.1 million tonnes of goods was hauled as freight transport on the Austrian section of the Danube in the year 2014, a decrease of 0.6 million t (-5.5%) compared to 2013.

The number of laden journeys rose from 9 470 to 9 706 (+2.5%). The total transport performance (i.e. the product of transport volume and distance travelled) was 9.9 billion tkm (tonne-kilometres) and therefore 1.2 billion tkm (-11.0%) lower than in 2013. Around 2.2 billion tkm (-7.5%) of this transport performance took place on the Austrian section of the Danube. The increase of laden journey with declining transport volume can be attributed to the lower capacity utilisation per kilometre (-6.0%).

The individual transport segments of the river shipping industry showed different developments. The international goods receipt decreased by 8.8 per cent or 0.5 million tonnes to 5 million t, the transit through Austria declined by 9.8 per cent to 2.3 million t. For international goods dispatch an increase of 2.2 per cent to 2.0 million t was reported. The inland transport rose by 13.9 per cent to 0.8 million t in the reference year, which can be attributed entirely to the increased transport volume of the goods group of stones, earth and building material (+0.2 million t).
