Asfinag reports substantial surplus from truck tolls

Continued positive development: Austrian Asfinag achieves an annual surplus of EUR 519 million in the fiscal year 2014

„In terms of economy, we are very successful – we can make the necessary investments into safety and congestion relief on our own in the future. This also relates to operating our route network, said Asfinag board members Klaus Schierhackl and Alois Schedl at a press conference in Vienna.

Asfinag, the Austrian motorway operator, is primarily funded by toll revenues. The revenues from truck tolls (vehicles over 3.5 tonnes) and Vignette and special tolls (vehicles under 3.5 tonnes) increased by 8 per cent compared to the previous year. Revenue from the truck toll amounted to EUR 1.242 billion (an increase of 9.4 per cent), from the car toll EUR 583 million (an increase of 5.4 per cent: EUR 428 million from Vignette, EUR 155 million from the special toll).

In 2014 the mileage of trucks and buses increased by 2.8 per cent compared to the previous year – with vehicles under 3.5 tonnes, it was 4.7 per cent. This corresponds to an average increase in overall traffic performance of 4.5 per cent.

By 2020, Asfinag provides a budget of EUR 7.2 billion for the Austrian motorway and expressway network. Their aim is to provide the safest highways and expressways in Europe – particularly when it comes to tunnels: EUR 1.5 billion will be invested in the tunnel safety program by 2019.
