„buybuy“ – with a click from America to Austria

Austrian Post introduces a new online service to expand its e-commerce operations; ‚buybuy“ makes ordering abroad easier

CEO Dr Georg Pölzl introduced a new project to expand e-commerce at Austria Post’s half-yearly conference. A service called „buybuy“ is planned, which should make online shopping abroad easier. „buybuy“ will be introduced in the fall of 2014, initially only for imports from the USA, although expansion into other countries is also planned.

The new concept involves first registering online at buybuy.at. After that, purchases can be made in the online shop. Austria Post’s partner – Singapore Post – takes over after this.

Georg Pölzl hopes that this service will attract considerable demand with regard to orders for technical devices and textiles from the USA.

Goods from third countries are subject to customs duty, of course. This falls due immediately after delivery of the order to Singapore Post. Customs duty is calculated based on the goods themselves, their value and their country of origin

The same customs regulations for tourist traffic do not apply to transport by post, however. For example, there is a so-called customs duty free exemption threshold which means that goods, the value of which (= purchase price + foreign taxes) is under 150 euros, cannot be subject to customs duty.

The whole process – from registration on the internet to delivery of the goods to customers – should take a maximum of 10 days. Transportation to Europe is by air freight.
