DKT Duisburg invests EUR 2 million into hazardous goods vats

To shift transport to the railway: DKT Duisburg Kombi-Terminal (Germany) optimises chemical logistics for hazardous materials

DKT Duisburg will improve its chemical logistics and shift more hazardous goods transportations from road to rail. They plan to equip the existing logport I rail terminal with additional hazardous substance vats next year. These vats will allow storage of up to 375 tank containers.

Thus, the subsidiary of Bertschi AG (Switzerland) makes an important contribution to further improve the safety of chemical logistics and support the efforts of the chemical industry to deliver dangerous goods on the railway. The investment amounts to around EUR 2 million. Up to ten new jobs will be created.

Since 2009, DKT operates logport I in Duisburg, a public rail terminal, which was built with the latest security technology. For example the terminal areas and the tracks have been fixed according to the latest requirements of the Water Resources Act. „DKT Duisburg offers logistics services for the local chemical industry in North Rhine-Westphalia and contributes significantly to shifting transport from road to the environmentally sound and safe railway. Today more than 30 weekly block trains are operated to a variety of national and international destinations,“ explains Dirk Knüppel, managing director.

For several years, the raw material for the regional chemical production is increasingly coming from outside Europe. This affects among other things, the supply chains that become much longer. To still ensure „just in time“-delivery to customers, the products must increasingly be stored temporarily. Thanks to the planned hazardous substance vats of DKT it will be possible to have these deliveries run from the seaports on the rail.
