First turn of the sod for the expansion of ÖBB’s Wolfurt cargo terminal

ÖBB’s Wolfurt cargo terminal to be substantially expanded until 2018 and equipped for future cargo transport requirements

At the ÖBB cargo terminal in Wolfurt (Vorarlberg), the long-planned expansion starts almost 30 years after its opening in 1982. In three phases, the terminal face of the major cargo node in western Austria grows by 72,000 m², or around 50 per cent to 106,000 m². This creates space and capacity for future challenges in rail freight transport.

With the ground breaking ceremony on 23 January, Transport Minister Alois Stoeger, Governor Markus Wallner, ÖBB CEO Christian Kern and the two mayors of the location Christian Natter from Wolfurt and Elmar Rhomberg from Lauterach, the major project was launched symbolically. In the next years, until full operation in August 2018, EUR 66 million will be invested within the current framework in three construction phases.

The terminal has had a dynamic development, because today, each month as many containers are handled as in the whole year of 1992. The expansion and modernisation is very important for the export-oriented economy in Vorarlberg and promotes sustainable development throughout the region.

Cargo handling on the railway in Wolfurt, in the important country-triangle of Switzerland – Austria – Germany will have the double performance capacity after the expansion. What is especially important for logistics customers of the terminal, is the new empty container store. Centrally located in the airport, up to 3,500 container units can be kept on site after completion.

In the north of the terminal Wolfurt a completely new area for the conventional wagon load traffic is built. Thus, the capacity for this transport sector will be increased from the current 2,900 cars per year to up to 4,000 cars.

In the first phase a new system for wagonload transport is built in the north, and the existing terminal will be usable for the most part, without restrictions. In the second phase in mid-2016, the establishment of the first part of the plant for combined freight traffic takes place.

In this phase, the range for the wagonload transport will be operating normally, the combined load transport will be handled with restrictions on the existing terminal area. In the final stages of construction in mid-2017 the southern structures will be built. In addition, the ÖBB will build a workshop for container repair and a service building to improve services. The loading of containers and swap bodies moves in this construction phase to the new terminal areas established in the previous phases.

Facts and figures about the terminal expansion:

• Four container loading tracks, each 600 m long

• Storage for 1,700 containers in the immediate crane area

• Three sidings with total length of 1,200 m for container wagons

• Empty container depot for 3,500 container units

• Designated area for wagonload tranyport –500 m tracks

• Construction start:  December 2014

• Three phases are implemented on the north, center and south construction sites

• Completion: August 2018
