The stevedoring company „Gerd Buss Stevedoring“, a subsidiary of the Hamburg-based Buss Group wants to continue its expansion. The staff is not only focused on all terminals in Hamburg and plant logistics for Vattenfall in Wedel, Arcelor Mittal in Hamburg, Yara in Brunsbüttel and the shipyard Abu Dhabi MAR in Kiel, but now also in the Rostock seaport.

There they take over the stevedoring of 97 foundation elements for the wind farms Godewind 1 and Godewind 2. In less than four years the number of employees rose from 35 to 110h through the various orders.

The handling of the 700 to 900-tonnes monopiles requires experience in dealing with extremely large and heavy project cargo. The employees of Gerd Buss Stevedoring take over putting on and knocking off during the transhipment by a special crane. Every move has to be perfectly executed. The foundation elements go by ship to the Orange Blue Terminal, the Dutch Multipurpose Terminal of Buss Port Logistics, which serves as a base port for wind farms.

The know-how of the stevedores of Gerd Buss Stevedoring is also in demand abroad, for example, for the „Polarled Pipeline Project“ of the oil and gas company Statoil ASA in Norway. A total of 4,800 pipes in Mo i Rana were lifted from land to the ship with the help of a team of Hamburg stevedorers and a special vessel equipped with a reachstacker.

The stevedores are working around the clock if necessary, 365 days a year with growing responsibility. Formerly the stevedores were traditionally responsible for the loading and unloading of non-containerised cargo, while today they cover all tasks related to the charge – from stowage plan, to loading, inspection or tally and seaworthy securing of loads, the so-called straps.

Wilfried Gerotzke, CEO Klaus Engeler, operational manager and Inspector Jan Seyer want Gerd Buss Stevedoring to advance further. They attach great value to keep track of all the important certifications and thus to ensure the high quality standard. The QM certification according to ISO 9001 and the Occupational Safety and Health Management „OHSAS 18001“ certification are the basis therefore.
