GLS digitalises 5,000 ParcelShops in Germany

Parcel service provider GLS kills the paper chaos in its 5,000 ParcelShops in Germany with smartphone technologie to save time and avoid errors

GLS parcel service provider has equipped its about 5,000 ParcelShops in Germany with modern IT infrastructure, making all future parcel shimpent processes more comfortable, secure and faster. A total of EUR 7 million was invested into this project.

A robust smartphone and charging station, and a bluetooth label printer are the basic inventory of the GLS ParcelShops. The smartphone has Android operating system and an intuitive user friendly ParcelShop App.

GLS is by its own account the first parcel service provider to equip its ParcelShops with this handy, convenient yet secure equipment for users from outside the industry, making the shipping for ParcelShop operators much easier.

„The smartphone brings state-of-the-art technology into the parcel processing,“ says Christian Herrlich, Managing Director GLS IT Services. The subsidiary of GLS  compiled the technology and programmed the app by themselves.

„Today almost everbody has a smartphone – ordering goods on the Internet or pursues a shipment“, says Christian Herrlich. „This made it obvious for us to handle the delivery of the goods with this easy-to-use technology.“

With the new equipment now all the steps in the GLS ParcelShop will be displayed digitally and can be performed intuitively. In the future, nothing must be written by hand in the ParcelShops any longer. This saves time and prevents errors.

For parcel senders and receivers the new facilequipment is very advantageous: With the new smartphone the shop owners can scan all GLS parcels they receive. Parcel senders receive a printed receipt – and thus a secure document.

If a parcel is picked up, the shop owner will scan it again. The recipient signs digitally on the smartphone. All data is transmitted to GLS‘ mobile IT system, where they are available through tracking both for the receivers and the senders.
