Port of Linz starts modernising its container terminal

Expanded depot area new gantry crane for container terminal in the port of Linz by mid-2014; 2012 was a good economic year

Following the completion of the silting-process of the three port basins (total investment EUR 10.8 million), the port of Linz is entering the next stage of reorganising multimodal transport and cargo transhipment. On a press conference Erich Haider, CEO Linz AG, announced the start of the works to modernise the container terminal. With an investment of EUR 5 million, the facility will be equipped with a new gantry crane, a new container repair hall, an expanded quay wall and new warehousing and transhipment areas by mid-2014. This shall boost the annual container volume to more than 350,000 TEU. The capacity of the container depot will be expanded from currently about 4,000 TEU to about 6,000 TEU.

In the 2012 financial year (ending 30 September) the Hafen Linz group registered positive development across most segments. Total throughput rose 5.1 per cent to 3.15 million tonnes in the reporting period. Water-to-land transhipment accounted for 1.172 million tonnes thereof (+4.33%), and land transhipment accounted for almost 2 million tonnes (+5.5%). Water-to-land volume declined by 6.55 per cent to 562,467 tonnes in the trade port, which can be attributed to less own business volume and the declining cargo group of fertilisers. Regarding this figure for the tanker port, a 16.88 per cent increase to 609,218 tonnes was registered. The volume handled at the container terminal in the port of the city of Linz amounted to 210,654 TEU (+7%), which means the port of Linz was able to improve its market share in Austria within this segment.

Operating in the segments container terminal, trade and tanker port, storage logistics, transport logistics and rental, the Hafen Linz group generated annual turnover of EUR 33.28 million, meaning a year-on-year increase of 8.1 per cent. The result of their normal business activity was clearly positive at EUR 6 million (plus special items). Apart from 140 regular employees the enterprise employed also 20 to 30 temporary workers on annual average.
