New train linking the ports of Vienna and Rostock

Intermodal shuttle from the port of Vienna to the Baltic States to start with two weekly departures on each course

From 12 May 2013 Vienna will have a direct link to the German port of Rostock. The intermodal shuttleservice Vienna-Rostock will initially offer two weekly departures on each course. Frequency is planned to be doubled after six months and to six weekly departures on the long term.

The train service is operated by European Rail Shuttle and Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo. The intermodal service connecting Central Europe and Scandinavia/Finland/Baltic States accepts craneable trailers and containers for transport, but also non-craneable trailers thanks to a cooperation with the CargoBeamer company.

Departures from the WienCont Terminal 1 in Vienna’s port of Freudenau will be on Tuesday and Friday 6:42 pm. The return course from the KLV Terminal of Rostock Trimodal GmbH departs on Wednesdays at 11:49 pm. and on Sundays on 7:43 am.

„This project responds to the necessity of providing a competitive alternative to road transport on this course, on the shortest possible route across the Czech Republic,“ explained Ulrich Bauermeister, managing director of the port of Rostock, and Friedrich Lehr MBA, managing director of the port of Vienna. While the port of Vienna serves as a hub for south and southeastern Europe, the port of Rostock offers more than 140 weekly departures in ferry and ro-ro traffic with Sweden, Finland, Denmark and the Baltic States.
