Expansion of Betuwe-route Emmerich-Oberhausen

Financial agreement of Germany’s government and Deutsche Bahn about construction of third rail track between Emmerich and Oberhausen

This week the German government, the government of North Rhine-Westphalia and Deutsche Bahn reached a financial agreement on the construction of a third rail track between Emmerich and Oberhausen. This agreement is a milestone in terms of the expansion of the Betuwe-route in Germany, which means a bottleneck for cargo trains on the Rotterdam-Duisburg route will be eliminated.

To ensure capacity for cargo traffic during the construction period, it is important the Kaldenkirchen-Duelken segment will be taken soon. The government of North Rhine-Westphalia is dealing with this. Completion of the third track will take several years, as this is scheduled for 2022.

Hans Smits, CEO Port of Rotterdam Authority, is delighted and relieved: “It had been a tough matter. Three years ago the third track had a little promising position on Germany’s priority list. However, the good and systematic lobbying with the government of the Netherlands and companies from the port has gradually turned the tide. Support from companies in North Rhine-Westphalia and the government of North Rhine-Westphalia had been decisive. It evolved from a project of the Port of Rotterdam into a project to support export force in the hinterland. Apart from the third track also a dozen of tunnels and bridges will be built, which will help reducing nuisance of riparians."
