Less and less road cargo transport is “Made in Austria“

ISA-survey recommends to take action to relieve the Austrian transport industry and confirms its claim for more political competence

The issue of transport is moving the Austrians. The competence of politics, however, is seen quite critically, as shows a survey conducted by the Strategic Analysis Institute (ISA) headed by Prof. Peter Filzmaier on behalf of the transport division of the Austrian Economic Chamber, which was presented in a press conference on 21 January. The study has elevated representatively mood in terms of transport business and the most important problems both of private employees, as well as companies in November 2014.

For 81 per cent of business owners and 70 per cent of private employees, politics does not care enough on the issue of transport. „What’s even worse, is that politics should worry about how their competence is assessed. Individual political parties were asked, and it showed that all parties are deemed not competent enough. The overall finding is negative,“ says Peter Filzmaier.

„A positively guided transport policy bears a huge potential. Politics should work to be considered competent – with concrete measures,“ stressed Alexander Klacska, Chairman of the Federal Division for transport, and referred to the acute need for action regarding the excessive bureaucracy, the high labour costs and high taxation of the transport sector: „We are indebted up to our ears.“

As the current economic survey of the federal division shows, the mood is still clouded and a general move away from the negative trend is not within sight. The expected demand is back in negative territory for the first time since 2012, the business situation is viewed negatively, and the majority of companies continue to lower their headcount in the months to come.

„Overall the transport volume increases, but with a decreasing share of domestic companies. Transport on Austria’s motorways and expressways increases, but less and less of it is ‚Made in Austria’. This means that more and more added value passes by Austria. Given that statistically, every domestic license plate means 1.5 jobs in Austria, this means that with every Austrian license plate that is lost, one and a half domestic jobs are lost too“.

Against this background, the Chairman of the Federal Division warns of further ideas for burdens such as a nationwide truck toll: „As we have seen in the past, each new cost drivers increases the tendency of outflagging. As a result, the state has millions of lost income, employment and added value decrease. We urgently need relief and timely action, allowing medium and long-term survival for domestic transport companies.“
