Logistikum OÖ: Research in the field of the ‚Physical Internet‘

‘Physical Internet‘ means entire reorganisation of goods transport and promises environmentally friendlier logistics A new research group of the Logistikum

University of Applied Sciences in Upper Austria (Campus Steyr) is treating the issue of Physical Internet, cooperating with the Canadian researcher and ‚inventor’ of the Physical Internet – Benoit Montreuil. The model for Physical Internet is the internet: within a joint transport network capacities are shared.

Physical Internet will revolutionise cargo transport, as it offers considerably more efficient, flexible and sustainable solutions.

Physical Internet means an entire reorganisation of cargo transport and promises environmentally friendlier logistics. The newly formed ‚Physical Internet research cooperation’ at the logistics department of the University of Applied Sciences in Upper Austria is searching for application-oriented, practicable solutions for the new cargo flows in the future.

Dr. Horst Treiblmaier manager of the project says: „Physical Internet as a research topic links supply chain management, transport logistics and logistic technology. As a research centre with about 50 researchers the logistics department of the University of Applied Sciences in Upper Austria offers the various competences needed for such a comprehensive lighthouse project – and longstanding cooperations with the industry and research partners.”

The researchers of the University of Applied Sciences in Upper Austria from the competence areas of supply chain management, transport logistics and logistics technology have been cooperating with Benoit Montreuil, the ‚inventor’ of the Physical Internet, for about a year. The Canadian teaches and does research at GeorgiaTech in Atlanta/USA.

But understanding the logistics discipline that drives thinking in networks for sustainable solutions is an important issue, especially within the EU and in the central region of Upper Austria. Dr. Oliver Schauer, professor at the University of Applied Sciences in Upper Austria (Campus Steyr) is a member of the EU group of experts from industry and research, who – in line with the initiative ALICE (Alliance for Logistics Innovation through Collaboration in Europe) – is looking for solutions that really deserve a green logistics-label.
