Slump in turnover for OOCL on the Asia-Europe routes

LogEastics 2012-01-24

Liner shipping company OOCL moved more container units in 2011 despite declining turnover:

Established in the global liner shipping business Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) faced a differentiated financial year 2011. For the full year of 2011, total volumes of containers transported increased by 5.6 per cent over the same period last year while total revenues recorded a 1.5 per cent-drop to USD 5,529 billion, as the enterprise based in Hong Kong announced at the end of last week. Overall average revenue per TEU decreased by 6.7 per cent during the reporting period.

Overall load factor of the ships was 4.8 percentage points lower than the corresponding period in 2010. The decline in revenues was mainly due to the liner services between Asia and Europe. Total revenues on these routes dropped 17.1 per cent to USD 1.064 billion, while the forwarded volume rose 8.8 per cent to 863,064 TEU. Also on the Trans-Pacific routes OOCL registered significant slumps in revenue (down 6.8 per cent).

Intra-Asian/Australasian services and Trans-Atlantic loops showed increases in revenue. 391.577 TEU (up 9.3%) were transported on the routes between Europe and the American continent, which accounted for total revenues at USD 667 million (up 13.3 %).
