Hamburg is N° 2 among Europe’s container ports again

LogEastics 2012-02-14

Port of Hamburg achieved above-average growth rate in 2011 in total throughput and container traffic

In the year 2011 the Port of Hamburg was able to achieve a positive development in sea cargo throughput, accompanied by gaining market shares. With 132.2 million tons handled in total at Germany's largest universal port, 9.1 per cent more sea cargo was handled than in the same period last year.

Container throughput increased by 14.2 percent or 1.12 million TEU to a total of 9 million TEU. Thus in 2011Hamburg reached by its own account the largest absolute growth in container throughput in the entire North European port range. And, as it is emphasised in a news release: "Hamburg is now again Europe's second largest container port."

The development in 2011 lets forecast Claudia Roller, Chairwoman of Port of Hamburg Marketing, also an increase for the current year. "For 2012 we also expect an increase in the throughput figure, which in comparison to 2011, however, is likely to slow down and reach a moderate increase in sea cargo throughput at the end of the year" she estimates.

The forthcoming navigation channel adjustments of the Lower and Outer Elbe river is aimed to raise Hamburg's competitive attractiveness as a European hub port for large ships among the North Range ports.
