New depot for the Vienna Technical Museum in Haringsee

On June 14, 2017, the new depot of the Vienna Technical Museum in Haringsee (Lower Austria) officially opened its doors. Gabriele Zuna-Kratky, Director General of the Vienna Technical Museum, together with Roman Sigmund, the mayor of Haringsee, and Josef Kirchberger, Managing Director of ART for ART Theaterservice GmbH gave the starting signal.

The new depot is based on a cooperation between ART for ART Theaterservice GmbH and the Vienna Technical Museum. The financial volume of the project totals around EUR 8 million.

Two years ago, they decided on the location for the new depot in Haringsee to replace the previous location in Vienna-Floridsdorf, where mainly transport objects (cars, motorcycles and bicycles) as well as other large and heavy objects, including some railroad objects and gliders, are preserved. After completion of the depot in December 2016, the transport of 2,000 transport units started, containing 10,000 objects in total.

The new building in Haringsee consists of an insulated wall and roof construction and ensures a relatively stable indoor climate with 45 to 55 percent relative humidity and 15° to 25° C temperature, through three drying plants and a floor plate with two heat pumps. The basic technical equipment includes also an alarm system, video surveillance, a fire alarm system and fire smoke ventilation as well as an electronic locking system, WLAN and a control desk for checking all essential functions.

The Vienna Technical Museum has around 160,000 objects in its collection, of which about 10 percent are exhibited in the museum. The majority of the objects is stored in three depots in Vienna (main depot in the Braillegasse) and Lower Austria (Haringsee and Marchegg for railway objects).
