Kuehne + Nagel optimises logistics of the Roche pharmaceuticals group in Greece and buys Australian perishables specialist Link Logistics The Kuehne + Nagel group developed and implemented an environmentally friendly logistics solution for the transport of temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products to Greece for its customer Roche. The solution covers the consolidation and transport from pick-up at Roche plants all over Europe to Greece (between +2°C and +8°C, and between +15°C and +25°C). As opposed to transport by airfreight the new model achieves a reduction in fuel consumption emissions over the same distance. Furthermore, the passive temperature control packing, which was previously required, is no longer needed, thus reducing the volume of the shipment as well as saving packing material. As a result of these measures, the CO2 emissions are reduced by around 85 per cent, as Kuehne + Nagel states. The service uses refrigerated trailers which permit exact temperature control and efficient double-stack loading. The majority of the tractor units conform to the Euro-5 standard. Kuehne + Nagel’s striving for strengthening its perishables logistics network led to an acquisition in Australia, as...

Airport of Hungary’s capital achieved record cargo throughput handling more than 100,000 tons in a year for the first time Budapest Airport achieved a record air cargo throughput in 2011. Handling 106,495 tons in total last year’s figure was clearly exceeded. Flown air cargo volumes grew by 6.4 per cent to almost 70,000 tons. Trucked volumes (Road Feeder Services) more than doubled on 2010 to nearly 37,000 tons. Christa Soltau, Vice President for Cargo and Logistics at Budapest Airport, sees these figures as a confirmation of the importance of the location as a gateway for the local cargo market, and as a hub for the whole central eastern European region. From her point of view growth achieved in the year 2011 came from Turkish Airlines starting a weekly freighter service between Budapest and Istanbul, and Cargolux Airlines increasing its cargo capacity on Asia-Hungary services – including the introduction of its new-generation B747-8 freighter, and American Airlines and Qatar Airways launching PAX services. Cathay Pacific Airways sees no signs for cargo-recovery on the routes ex China and Hong Kong: The lacking demand over the Christmas peak and several other negative developments caused a moderate business year 2011 to Cathay Pacific Airways’ air cargo segment. Including the operations of the Dragonair airline, the enterprise transported 1.65 million tons of air freight and mail around the globe. This is 8.6 per cent less than in the previous year. Cathay Pacific General Manager Cargo Sales & Marketing James Woodrow said the limited demand for air freight services out of the key markets in Hong Kong and Mainland China was the main reason for this moderate result. There is no sign of any upturn in prospect he says. Cathay Pacific Cargo markets the air freight capacity of 131 aircraft, including 20 Boeing 747-400 freighters. Transported tonnage amounted to 1.9 million tons (up 5 per cent on 2010) – a record level. The traffic region Europe accounted for 634,000 tons. The airline raised its capacity over the twelve months by 8.6 per cent. The increase is chiefly attributable to the integration of the capacities of aircraft in the fleet of Austrian Airlines and the expansion to eight Boeing 777 freighters in the fleet of the AeroLogic joint venture. Sales of revenue freight-tonne kilometres rose 6.5 per cent; capacity utilisation declined from 70.9 per cent in the previous year to 69.5 per cent. “Especially in our German home market, we made full use of strong export demand to gain market shares.
