Danish shipping group Maersk Line continue with their “slow steaming“-concept

In spite of the growing world economy the “slow steaming“-concept will remain an element of the service portfolio of the Danish shipping group Maersk Line. In a press release the enterprise announces that they will continue with the relevant model and meet the customers’ requirements at the same time. CEO Eivind Kolding refers to this approach as a good and viable solution for customers, environment and their own business model.

„Slow steaming“ means the average speed of container vessels is choked by around 20 per cent. This reduces fuel consumption by 40 per cent and lowers CO2 emissions. Despite using one or two additional vessels per string Maersk Line was able to reduce the CO2 emission of its fleet by around 7 per cent in the past 18 months. The management’s target is to reduce CO2 emissions by about 25 per cent before the year 2020.
