Port of Hamburg remains Austria’s top container port

For the Port of Hamburg, Austria remains one of the most important countries of the Central European hinterland, said Axel Mattern, CEO Port of Hamburg Marketing, in his speech on the occasion of the traditional port evening on May 3 in Vienna. About 250 guests from Austrian shipping agencies, forwarders, logistics providers, rail operators, container trucking companies and inland ports attended the event at Weingut Wolf in Neustift am Walde.

Last year about 3 million tonnes of goods with origin or destination in Austria passed the Port of Hamburg. Handling 295,000 TEU (+9.26%) or about 50 percent market share, the north-German maritime port was able to maintain its top position in the segment of containerised sea freight. Currently more than 80 weekly container trains are operated between the sea port and the hinterland.

Notwithstanding, the port still operates as a universal port providing specialised service systems for breakbulk, conventional load and project logistics, said Alexander Till, Manager Port of Hamburg Representative Office Vienna.
