Ports of Rotterdam intends to boost rail traffic with Austria

Containerlogistics: Rail Incubator of the Port of Rotterdam offers financial support to container and cargo railway operators to increase the frequency

Europe’s leading container port Rotterdam is bringing in the so-called „Rail Incubator“ in order to boost the expansion of block train traffic between the container terminals in the port of Rotterdam and Austria.

In this context Emile C. Hoogsteden, Vice President Containers, Breakbulk & Logistics Havenbedrijf Rotterdam N.V., attracted attention through her speach at the Lounge of the Port of Vienna. She announced an offer for financial support by the Port of Rotterdam to Austrian container and cargo railway operators to establish new rail links and increase the frequency on the existing intermodal routes.

This campaign requires a coherent business case and must be limited to two or three years. It was a means to mitigate the start-up costs of new or expanded rail products, said Emile C. Hoogsteden. In 2014, around 50,000 TEU were transported on the rail between Rotterdam and Austria.
