Private railway companies operate one third of Austria’s block trains

2013 annual report of Schienen Control shows: A quarter of all goods in Austria is transported by private railway companies

Competition on the rail was increasing, the shares of private railway companies had been rising in 2013 in Austria. Giving these facts, Mag. Maria-Theresia Röhsler, managing director of the Schienen Control GmbH (Vienna) presented the 2013 annual report to the federal regulatory authority for rail traffic on 8 July.

According to this report the increasing competition in Austrian rail traffic shows positive effects. Hence the total share of private railway companies in the cargo transport volume (in tonnes) rose by 1.7 percentage points from 23.2 per cent in 2012 to 24.9 per cent. As for block trains the private railway companies account for 33 per cent or about one third of the market. The share in transport performance (net tonne kilometres) rose from 17.6 per cent to 19.3 per cent. The private railway companies’ share in train kilometres in cargo traffic grew by 21.5 per cent from 5.5 million to 6.7 million.

According to the 2013 annual report increases in transport volume could mainly be seen on the highly competitive routes “Westbahn“, up 3.5 per cent, and “Brennerachse“, up 2.2. per cent, with private railway companies mainly scoring with block train operations and bookings on short notice. The total transport volume in Austrian rail cargo traffic has slightly declined due to market conditions in 2013.

In total Schienen-Control registered 47 railway enterprises as per 31 December 2013 in Austria. 26 of them were railway transport enterprises, eight railway infrastructure enterprises and 13 integrated railway companies. Four market players had started operations in 2013: As to cargo transport, those were ECCO Rail, PKP Cargo S.A. and the Dutch ERS Railways B.V.; in passenger transport there was the Bayerische Oberlandbahn GmbH, connecting Salzburg and Kufstein crossing the border. In total 40 of the 47 registered companies are from Austria, three from Germany, two from Hungary and one each from Poland and the Netherlands.
