Record investments with Bertschi Group in 2015

Suspension of Euro-minimum exchange rate by the Swiss National Bank (SNB) has prompted cost optimisation with the Bertschi AG

2015 will turn into a record year regarding investments with the bulk logistics specialist Bertschi AG. The company wants to promote globalisation and real net output ratio of the logistics services at the same time, chief executive Hans-Jörg Bertschi said in the annual works assembly on 17 January 2015 in Dürrenäsch (Switzerland).

Besides investments into the expansion of the European container terminal, a large-scale project in chemistry logistics outside of Europe is on the agenda for 2015 for the first time. By setting up a chemistry logistics centre in Singapore one of the most exciting projects in the 50-year company history is being implemented.

The new facility with several barrel-filling lines, 25.000 pallet storage positions and a container depot of thousand loaded tank containers, specialises in the storage and handling of liquid chemical products. Starting in mid 2015, the facility will be opened step by step. The first major customer is a multinational chemical concern, whose new plant in Singapore will be starting operation soon.

The decision of the Swiss National Bank (SNB) to suspend the Euro minimum exchange rate on 15 January is a major setback for Bertschi. The company generated more than 90 % of its turnover in the Euro region. A quarter of the staff, that is 550 people, is employed in Switzerland as the services offered by the group are centralised in Switzerland.

The new exchange rate will lead to a number of challenges for the company in 2015, as costs in Switzerland increased by 20 % over night. Bertschi will do its best to achieve higher added value figures as soon as possible with cost optimisations and new logistics concepts in the hope to at least partly compensate for the consequences of the decision made by SNB.

Presently, the globally active transport- and logistics service provider Bertschi operated 60 locations in 31 countries. In 2014, turnover increased by 5 % to CHF 670 million due to their global approach initiated four years ago. This resulted in a good operating result for the company.
