Robert Kukla forwarding invests into pallet-wide 40‘-containers

Opitmised transport box with 20 per cent more pallet slots: Robert Kukla forwarding company uses Shippers Own Container from/to Greece and Levant

The Robert Kukla forwarding company, specialising in multimodal transport, is investing into special pallet-wide 40′ containers, which in comparison with conventional ISO containers can transport 20 per cent more Euro-pallets. Thus, the Munich-based logistics service provider closes a gap in the offering of shipping companies operating worldwide. In the context of intercontinental container handling, they do not accept regionally different container dimensions.

The containers acquired by Robert Kukla are suitable for the European market in particular. „With an interior width of 2.43 meters, instead of the 2.35 meters of standard ISO containers, our container is tailor-made for Euro-pallets,“ explains Knut Sander, managing partner of the company. The pallet wide inside dimension will not only create 30 parking spaces, but guarantees also perfect load security through form fit. A 40′ ISO container provides only space for 25 Euro pallets, which also have to be secured against slipping.

During a first test phase Kukla has already bought 20 containers, which are used now in sea transport between Thessaloniki and the North Range ports of Rotterdam, Antwerp, Bremerhaven and Hamburg. The purchase of additional containers next year is already scheduled. „We intend to significantly expand our commitment to the Shippers Own Container (SOC)“, Knut Sander announces. His company still sees a strong development potential for the activities in the area of short-sea shipping, started about 15 years ago. „With the own containers, we will expand our market-leading position,“ says Sander.

For Kukla the pallet wide 40′ containers are clearly the better choice compared to the wide range 45′ container. In Levant – ie in the countries of the eastern Mediterranean – the 40′ containers have clearly pushed through, not least reflected in the cargo hold dimensions. „With the 40′ containers we can access the full shipment frequency of Deep-Sea-Carriers ithout congestion problems,“ explains Knut Sander. In addition, it was stated that the goods mainly exported from Greece are relatively compact and heavy cargo. This would not allow the company use additional capacity of a 45′ container, without exceeding the weight limit. The result would be wasted cargo space and complex load securing.
