Tibbett Logistics to extend its activities for Metro Group in Romania

Starting in Febuary 2015: Logistics specialist Tibbett awarded multi-year intermodal logistics contract by the Metro Group in Romania

Romania’s largest privately owned contract logistics specialist, Tibbett Logistics – part of the UK-based Keswick Enterprises Group – has won a new multi-year logistics contract with one of its original intermodal customers in Romania, Metro Group Buying HK Ltd. The intermodal logistics contract commences in February 2015.

Based in Hong Kong, Metro Group Buying (MGB) is the non-food purchasing organisation within the Metro Group, and is responsible for the international procurement of direct imports for the multiple retailer. This merchandise includes sporting goods, footwear, clothing, kitchenware, office equipment, toys, electronics and more. In total, the business serves more than 2,200 Metro Group stores in 32 countries.

Tibbett Logistics’ new contract will see the logistics specialist extend its activities as receiving agent for MGB in Romania, handling the documentation and planning of imports. It will also undertake inland haulage, by both road and rail, of inbound containers destined for Metro Cash & Carry outlets across the country.

Marco van der Schans, Head of Transport Management at Metro Group Buying HK Ltd, commented: “Our intermodal operations with Tibbett Logistics began with block train services into Bucharest in 2008. Up to that time, all inbound haulage in Romania had been managed through other suppliers by road. The move to intermodal proved not only cost-effective for us in a period of rising fuel prices, but also more reliable in terms of the flow of goods and information via EDI. An additional knock-on benefit has been the increased security of the operations by train – with missing goods being practically eliminated. For these reasons it was an easy decision to extend our logistics contract, and we look forward to another successful period of cooperation with Tibbett Logistics.”

Tibbett Logistics CEO, David Goldsborough, added: “The award of this high-profile new logistics contract is particularly pleasing for the entire team because MGB was one of our very first customers when we launched our intermodal logistics service in Romania in 2008. It suggests that Metro has been satisfied with the quality of our services over a lengthy period of time, and should take us to the point where we will be able to celebrate 10 years of service with Metro Group in the intermodal division.”

Tibbett Logistics provides intermodal logistics and extensive supply chain management services to the automotive, textiles, retail and other FMCG sectors across Romania and elsewhere in South East Europe. As well as operating over 80,000 m² of warehousing at 11 locations, the company has a distribution fleet comprising tilt trailers, double- and triple-chamber reefers and container chassis – along with its own intermodal rail wagons.
