Transport prices fall 3.7pc

Transport prices fell by 3.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2015 compared to the last quarter of 2014, according to the Transport Market Monitor by Transporeon and Capgemini Consulting.

Even so, the index, which stands at 94.7 for the first quarter of 2015, is 3.3 percentage points higher than a year ago.

The diesel index fell 8.1 per cent to 86.1 in the first quart and is now 14.8 per cent lower than the same period last year.

At the same time, the capacity index increased 14.4 per cent to 104.0.

Erik van Dort, supply chain director at Capgemini said: “Since 2008 we have always witnessed a sharp increase in capacity in the first quarter, leading to a lower price index, but in Q1 2015 the effect was not as extreme as in previous years. This is caused by the European economic recovery which has increased demand for trucking capacity. Apart from this, the low diesel price is also good news for both shippers and carriers.”
