Upper Austria to become a model region for Physical Internet

Forum Alpbach: Physical Internet lets goods flow like data – meaning a revolution of cargo transport

The international working group on the future issue of Physical Internet has been a highlight of the Upper Austrian program on this year’s technology talks in the course of the European Alpbach Forum

Physical Internet will revolutionise cargo transport, making possible a total reorganisation of goods flows in the future. For a better use of global procurement and sales markets, goods shall be flowing like date on the Internet. Therefore so-called “speaking packaging units“ are used, with technology enabling them to communicate information about their destination, desired delivery time etc.

Dr. Michael Strugl, provincial council for economy, emphasized: “Just as 25 years ago many regarded the Internet for an expert system, and it has long been daily reality now, so this will be the same with the Physical Internet in the future. Upper Austria is to become a model region in this area.”

Also Doris Hummer provincial council for research said: “We will continue to pursue the issue Physical Internet consistently in Upper Austria, as it will revolutionize the movement of goods in the future. Science and business work hand in hand.” Currently, there is a model region for Physical Internet in Canada, another was started in France. Production will develop the capabilities to produce small units ( batches) at competitive costs and to make their products “talk”. The task of logistics – the supply chain management – is to join the production units to a value added network and to use the communication capabilities of products/equipment for transparency throughout the value added chain and thus to bring the special skills of a 4.0-production into action.  This logical step to complete the 4.0 activities by extending them to logistics (and in particular to SCM) is set to another revolution:
Physical Internet, letting goods flow like data on the Internet.
