Amazon officially announces sub-letting of used UK facilities

Amazon has announced that it is sub-letting property in the UK which it has never fully utilised.

The online retailer and 3PL is sub-letting its 125,000ft² delivery depot in Gloucester which it pre-let from Peveril Securities in 2021 but has never fully used.

Only last month Logistics Manager reported that the online retailer and 3PL was considering sub-letting and disposing surplus space in the UK but only one property had been linked to that decision – a 90,000ft² delivery station in Bracknell.

Now, a spokesperson for Amazon has confirmed that the Gloucester depot on Centre Servern in Barnwood Gloucester will be sub-let. The spokesperson said: “We’re always evaluating our network to make sure it fits our business needs and to improve the experience for our employees and customers. As part of this, the vacant site in Gloucester will be sub-let.”

The property also includes a 270,000ft² decked van park on a site of approximately 14 acres.

In January this year, Amazon announced that it would close three fulfilment centres and seven delivery stations totalling around 1.4 million ft², with the loss of some 1,200 jobs in the UK, but at the same time open two new mega fulfilment centres and a further two delivery stations totalling in excess of 4 million ft² creating 2,500 jobs.

Amazon said it was “always evaluating” its network to “make sure it fits” its business requirements. “As part of that effort, we may close older sites, enhance existing facilities, or open new sites” a spokesperson said.
