Amazon to open 1m sq ft Doncaster fulfilment centre

Amazon is to open a 1m sq ft plus fulfilment centre in Doncaster in summer 2017 creating 500 new permanent jobs.

The new facility at Verdion’s £500 million iPort scheme will be Amazon’s third fulfilment centre in Doncaster, it already has a fulfilment centre in Balby Carr Bank opened in 2010 and a second in Water Vole Way opened in autumn 2015.

The 500 job roles are in additional of the 3,500 full time jobs Amazon has pledged to create this year.

“We already have two fulfilment centres in Doncaster so know from experience that there is strong talent in the region who would be well suited to working for Amazon,” said John Tagawa, Amazon vice president of UK operations. “We look forward to hearing from people to fill a range of roles you would expect of a business like Amazon, from specialist professions such as engineering, HR or IT, through to large strategic leadership roles and people to fulfil customer orders maintaining our customer promise.”

The developer has said that it had leased two logistics units, totalling 1,315,600 sq ft. One unit totalling 1,100,000 sq ft of warehouse space had been pre-let while the other totalling 215,600 sq ft with 10,000 sq ft of two-storey offices had been taken on a speculative basis.

Verdion is developing iPort on a 337 acre site in Rossington, Doncaster as a Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) which will deliver more than 6 million sq ft of Grade A logistics warehousing linked with a high specification rail freight intermodal container facility providing rail freight services with continental gauge clearance to all major UK ports and the Channel Tunnel. The scheme offers design and build warehouse/logistics units from 50,000 to 1.2 million sq ft. The site is linked with Junction 3 of the M18 via the Great Yorkshire Way which opened in February 2016.

There are two other Amazon fulfilment centres being opened this year, one in Manchester and the other in Coalville, Leicestershire. These facilities will generate 1,500 new jobs.
