Amazon warehouse refused planning
Councillors have gone against planning officers’ recommendations and refused permission for the development of a 2.86 million ft² Amazon fulfilment centre in Cleckheaton, near Huddersfield in West Yorkshire.
The application has been contentious right from the start and has even been brought up in Parliament. There have been over 2,000 objections including from councillors and local MP Kim Leadbeater.
The unit would have had a ground floor plus four mezzanine levels and would have been operational 24/7. Around 1,500 jobs were to be have been made available initially, rising to a 2,400 within three years.
The site is southwest of Junction 26 of the M62 motorway, about 1.5km northwest of the centre of Cleckheaton.
Kirklees Council rejected the proposal this week amidst concerns around highways, biodiversity, impact on local amenities and masterplanning.
A spokesperson for Amazon said: “We will now consider our options for this location.”
