Austrian Airlines resumes flights from Vienna to Tokyo

Austrian Airlines will resume its flight service from Austria to Japan. From 15th of May five weekly flights will be operated each week to the Japanese capital city deploying a Boeing 777.

“We had to terminate the flight service on the route to Tokyo back in 2016 due to the economic downturn and the currency decline in Japan. Now market conditions are significantly better. There is potential for this flight service once again”, explains Stephan Linhart, Senior Director Sales Austria & Slovakia.

In the current summer flight schedule, flights are operated to Japan’s capital city on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The duration of the flight from Vienna to Tokyo at a distance of over 9,100 kilometers is about eleven hours.

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Austrian Airlines, Austrian Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz met Lufthansa Group CEO Carsten Spohr in Vienna. The background of this this top-level meeting in the afternoon of Tuesday, May 15, 2018, was a discussion on the importance of Austrian in European flight traffic.

The two dialogue partners agreed that the aviation sector is a major driving force for Austrian tourism and industry. With a contribution of EUR 4 billion, it substantially contributes to total value creation, accounting for about 1.4 per cent of Austria’s total gross domestic product. Good connectivity ensures good export opportunities for the domestic economy. 50 per cent of the value of the goods exported by Austria is transported by air cargo.

“Vienna’s role as an air traffic interface is essential for the Austrian economy. For this reason, I pledged my full support to Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr in safeguarding the viability of Vienna Airport and expanding its role as a flight hub. In particular, we want to quickly implement the 3rd Runway project“, says Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz.

Carsten Spohr, Lufthansa Group CEO adds: “In a global comparison, air traffic develops particularly favorably at those flight hubs where all system partners – from the airlines and air traffic control to the airports and political decision makers work particularly well together. In addition to our important air traffic interfaces in Munich, Zurich and Frankfurt, we want to further enhance the profitability of Vienna and expand its role as a flight hub in European air traffic.”
