CMA calls for comments on Amazon-Deliveroo deal

The Competition and Markets Authority is considering launching a full investigation into plans by Amazon to take a stake in Deliveroo, on the basis that it might result in a substantial lessening of competition.

In June, the CMA served an enforcement notice on Amazon and Roofoods (Deliveroo’s parent company) to stop the deal while it decided whether to launch an investigation. It is inviting comments on the transaction from any interested party, and has set a deadline of 30th September for this.

In May, Amazon revealed that it planned to be the largest investor in Deliveroo’s latest funding round, which has been launched to raise $575 million.

Doug Gurr, Amazon UK country manager, said: “We’re impressed with Deliveroo’s approach, and their dedication to providing customers with an ever increasing selection of great restaurants along with convenient delivery options.”

The money will be used to expand Deliveroo’s engineering team based in its London headquarters, as well as expanding its delivery reach.
