DHL Express: 50 years of global logistics

Shortly after the moon landing of Neil Armstrong in 1969, Adrian Dalsey, Larry Hillblom and Robert Lynn had the revolutionary idea of carrying documents for cargo ships via hand luggage on aircraft. Thus, the customs clearance of the cargo could begin even before the actual arrival of the ships and thus exponentially shorten the waiting times in the port. It was also the birth of a whole new industry – the international air express service – and the beginning of DHL’s journey.

“DHL revolutionized the world economy with an idea 50 years ago. And even today, it is the endeavor of the Deutsche Post DHL Group, as the world’s leading logistics company, to connect people all over the world. With innovative logistics and transport solutions, we want to help make everyday life easier, whether privately or professionally,” said John Pearson, CEO of DHL Express.

In 2008, the company committed to improving CO2 efficiency by 30 per cent by 2020 compared to the base year of 2007. This goal has already been achieved in 2016.

John Pearson: “As a global company, we have a special responsibility and do everything we can to keep our environmental footprint as small as possible. That’s why we want to reduce transport-related emissions to zero by 2050.”
