Duisburg’s ports reach container record in 2011

Total cargo throughput in Duisburg’s ports rose ten per cent in 2011 to 125.6 million tons

Container throughput was running at full speed in the Duisburg ports in 2011. With a total volume of 2.5 million TEU last year’s figure was exceeded by ten per cent. "Compared to the previous year this figure means an increase of 20 per cent", the duisport group announced late last week.

In the reporting period the total cargo handled in Duisburg’s ports improved by ten per cent to 125.6 million tons (2010: 114 million tons). The duisport plants accounted for 64 million tons thereof, thus reaching a record. Apart from container handling the main growth drivers were the following groups of goods: coal, mineral and chemical products.

The volume of coal handled by the duisport Group rose 42 per cent year-on-year to nearly 9 million tons. Iron and steel throughput also showed a significant double-digit growth. Throughput with vessels accounted for 51 million tons (2010: 49 million tons) of the total volume, while 28 million tons (2010: 27 million tons) were handled by train.

"Of course we are delighted about the very good turnover figures and the dynamic development of the site over the past few years”, comments Erich Staake, CEO of the Port of Duisburg AG. The apparent weakening of the global economy will make it harder to confirm its high level, according to his opinion.
