duisport balance 2018: Growth in trade with China

The 2018 container throughput of Duisburger Hafen AG (duisport) remained at the record level of the previous year at 4.1 million TEU. However, total goods throughput fell from 68.3 million tonnes to 65.3 million tonnes. This was mainly attribuatble to the long low water period. Stable volumes in the mineral oil and chemical sectors, but significant declines in steel were registered in the past year. Coal throughput continues to decline due to the energy transition.

In contrast, trade with China continues to gain in importance. Currently, around 35 to 40 trains a week are operated between duisport and a dozen of destinations in China. The Port of Duisburg expects further growth from cooperating with Chinese partners as well as projects along the Silk Road.

Duisburger Hafen AG owns and manages the Port of Duisburg, the world’s largest inland port. For this port and logistics location, the duisport group offers full range services for infra- and superstructure, including relocation management. In addition, the subsidiaries also provide logistics services, such as the development and optimization of transport and logistics chains, rail freight services, building management and packaging logistics.
