Inland navigation: BDB wins DWSV as a new member

The association of German inland navigation – Bundesverband der Deutschen Binnenschifffahrt e.V. (BDB), headquartered in Duisburg with an representative office in Berlin, welcomes another new member: The application for membership of the German association Deutscher Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsverein Rhein-Main-Donau e.V. (DWSV)was unanimously adopted during the BDB board meeting in Berlin on 7th November, 2018.

The association thus underlines its efforts to expand the network to support the interests of the inland shipping industry throughout the German waterway network. In a press release DWSV is welcomed as an extremely competent partner for all matters relating to shipping in southern Germany.

DWSV focuses on the Main-Danube waterway as one of the most important inland waterways in Europe with the vision of a high quality and efficient waterway from the North Sea to the Black Sea. In this sense, the association wants to inform about the macroeconomic and ecological benefits of efficient waterways, promote the awareness of the population and the social acceptance of efficient waterways, water and flood protection and increase the attractiveness of the waterway for freight and passenger shipping as well as for leisure and recreation.

The Main-Danube Canal, which was opened in September 1992, was the last lighthouse project to expand the German waterway network. Since the opening for traffic, expectations for the 171-kilometer artificial waterway, which makes an important contribution to water supply and prosperity in Bavaria, have been surpassed.

Together, DWSV and BDB will formulate their demand towards politics and the government to finally realise the urgently needed expansion of the Danube between Straubing and Vilshofen, for which the shipping industry has been waiting in vain for years after the decision in the Bavarian Cabinet in 2013. “With DWSV we have a competent partner by our side, in order to fight together for a clear optimisation of the conditions on Main and Danube”, emphasises BDB President Martin Staats (MSG).

BDB (founded in 1974)represents the common commercial interests of entrepreneurs in freight and passenger shipping towards politics, administration and other institutions. Members of the BDB are particuliers, shipping companies and cooperative associations. The supporting members also support the work of the BDB.
