K LINE partners with KEPCO and signs an MoU for the study of liquified CO2 for more sustainable shipping

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, (K LINE) has today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the joint study of liquefied CO2 shipping for developing carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) supply chain with The Kansai Electric Power Co (KEPCO).

The two companies will jointly study optimal marine transportation solutions and the shipping costs of liquefied CO2 emitted from KEPCO’s thermal power plants, and aim to develop the CCS value chain in future.

The companies expect CCS TECHNOLOGY to play a role in contributing to reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.

This joint study will investigate the method of liquefied CO2 marine transportation, which is suitable for long-distance and large-scale transportation and develop a more flexible CCS value chain.

K LINE is also taking part in the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development, which is a CO2 ship transport demonstration, as well as the Northern Lights project in Norway, which is the world’s first ‘full scale’ CCS project.
