Lidl starts work on £70m headquarters building

Lidl has started work on a £70m headquarters building in Tolworth which will have 250,000 sq ft of space to accommodate 800 employees when it is completed in two year’s time.

The new site, which is five miles away from Lidl’s current HQ in Wimbledon will provide support for the retailers growing UK store network and 13 warehouses across the country.

Chief executive Christian Härtnagel said: “We’re very excited to have started the construction of our new head office and it was great to welcome guests to the site today. The investment in our new headquarters underlines our long-term commitment to the UK and will help facilitate our growth for years to come. We’re really looking forward to joining the Tolworth community and becoming a neighbour to the existing businesses here.”

Last week Lidl invited local politicians and councillors to the construction site. Guests including Sir Ed Davey, MP for Kingston and Surbiton and Thay Thayalan, Mayor of Kingston upon Thames, were given a tour of the site by members of Lidl’s senior management team.
