The ships operate on dual-fuel engines capable of sailing on green fuel as well as standard marine fuel. They will be built by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), with each having a capacity of approximately 17,000 TEU.

With this addition, Maersk has ordered 19 of these vessels in total, all of which are set to be delivered in 2025. They will replace ships in the existing fleet in an attempt to meet customer demands for decarbonised supply chains.

The order meets the company’s principle of only ordering newly built vessels that can be operated on green fuels. Maersk hopes to see significant progress in lowering carbon emissions by 2030, with the aim of reaching net zero emissions across the company by 2040. To do this, the company will have to reduce their emissions by 50% compared with 2020.
