ONE and Sony to develop ‘smart container solution’

Container shipping company Ocean Network Express (ONE) has today [20 Feb] announced plans to collaborate with Sony Network Communications Europe on the development of a ‘smart container solution’ for its global fleet.

Sony technology will be used to develop ‘technology-enabled containers’ that ONE says will offer greater insights about its container fleet. The hope is that this solution will enable better visibility of the company’s containers as well as faster and more proactive decision-making, which it hopes would allow for more efficient container movement.

With the new solution, ONE customers should be able to gain visibility through live updates on shipments. They should also have access to ‘more reliable shipping data for easy, transparent communication with relevant stakeholders’.

Erik Lund is Head of the Tracking Division at Visilion, Sony Network Communications Europe’s cargo tracking and supply chain visibility solution. He explained how he thinks ONE will benefit from the development and implementation of this technology, saying: “The real-time insights gained across ONE’s fleet will allow them to further optimise their shipping business and in doing so, improve customer service.”

ONE was born out of a merger between the container shipping divisions of three Japanese shipping companies – Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (“K” LINE), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), and Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) – in 2017.

Managing Director of Product and Network at ONE, Hiroki Tsujii said: “Together with Sony, we are excited to create the future of container shipping.
