Port of Antwerp pushes conventional trade

Cooperation of Port of Antwerp and Alfaport Antwerp trade associations

The Antwerp port community will make additional efforts to attract new conventional trade to the port. Therefore five contracts were signed on Tuesday, 2 February. They represent five types of cargo, namely steel, fruit, forest products, project cargo and ro/ro. In addition to individual promotion efforts, these agreements include working agreements between Antwerp Port Authority and the 5 trade associations of Alfaport Antwerp. The signatories are Antwerp Port Authority, Alfaport Antwerpen, the General Association of Antwerp Stevedoring & Port Companies (ABAS), the Antwerp Shipping Association (ASV), the Royal Belgian Association of Ship Operators, and the Association for Forwarding, Logistics and Freight Interests in Antwerp (VEA).

With these measures the leading breakbulk port in Europe wants to maintain and expand its position. One task of the program is a stronger presence of the port and the companies settled in the Antwerp port area at events, conferences and trade fairs in their sector. The contracts form part of the “Total Plan” that includes a closer collaboration between the private and public sectors of the port, aiming also to overcome the recession. The work groups of the project are effectively starting their activities this week.
