Private cargo railway operators are advancing in Austria

Significant uptrend in the rail sector: In 2014 Austria had the highest transport performance in rail cargo traffic

22.5 billion net tonne kilometres in rail cargo transport – shows Schienen-Control’s current market report for 2014. “This means an all time high performance in rail cargo transport”, Maria-Theresia Röhsler, General Manager Schienen-Control, is please with the performance. This means the cargo volume carried over long distances by rail in Austria has never been higher than in the previous year. For Alois Stöger, Transport Minister the positive development of rail freight is “shows that business and industry in Austria are on the upswing. Our investment in the transport infrastructure is crucial therefore.”

The private rail cargo operators could increase their performance once again. Their market share in terms of volume (tonnes) rose from 24.9 per cent last year to 26.2 per cent. The market share of transport performance (net tonne kilometres) rose from 19.3 per cent to 21.4 per cent or by 2.1 percentage points. With private railway operators accounting for more than 40 per cent, the competitive situation had been quite fierce on the Brenner route and the Danube corridor between Vienna and Passau. In the ÖBB network there are currently 21 rail cargo operators, five passenger transport enterprises and eight transport companies operating in both segments – a total of 34 railway operators.
