QR Cargo: New “Pharma Express” service and all-in freight rates

Air freight service: Qatar Airways Cargo (Doha) announces new freighter destination Basel and launch of “Pharma Express” service

For its first new freighter service of 2015, Qatar Airways Cargo will launch twice weekly freighter services to Basel, Switzerland, on 28 January 2015. The airline will also commence a “Pharma Express” service this month, offering air freight to the pharmaceutical industry worldwide. The “Pharma Express” route will be served by the Airbus 330 freighter and will operate from Brussels to Basel with a final stop in Doha, Qatar on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Basel has a large pharmaceutical industry and is home to the headquarters of many major pharmaceutical companies, while the Swiss chemical industry also operates largely from Basel. Brussels and the region of Flanders in Belgium, house 146 life science companies with biotech activities, of which 50 are related to healthcare, 46 are active in the bio-based economy and 50 are life science providers.

From April, Qatar Airways is to apply all-in freight rates. The change in the pricing structure to a “one-rate basis”, is thus eliminating the current surcharge conventions, which „expose the supply chain to significant price volatility”. The Doha-based carrier will “abolish” both its fuel (MYC) and security (MOC) surcharges. All other ancillary charges will remain in place. The move follows a decision by Dubai-based Emirates SkyCargo, to introduce an all-in rates tariff (on which we reported earlier this year).

Responding to its customers’ requests, Qatar Airways Cargo has has decided to take a phased approach from April 2015, and to transition its cargo pricing structure to a one-rate basis.
