Rail Cargo Group increases service to Monfalcone and Trieste

The Rail Cargo Group – freight transport division of ÖBB – underlines in a press release its leading position in the segment of rail transport to and from Trieste. Since the market entry in 2012, the traffic volume from and to Trieste has increased by about 60 percent. For the year 2018, a further increase of 20 percent is planned. To reach this target, the port will be connected with new economic regions in Central Europe by rail, the company informs in a press release.

The connection to and from Monfalcone will also be expanded. In this context, the aim of the Rail Cargo Group is to strengthen the port of Monfalcone as a hub for automotive and timber transport.

“Together with our partners in Trieste, we want to develop additional logistics solutions with our customers. Using new multi-system locomotives and new wagon equipment, we will systematically expand our position in Trieste and Monfalcone,” says Erik Regter, Board Director of the Rail Cargo Group.

About 90 percent of the goods on the Silk Road between China and Europe are shipped by sea. Thanks to its geographical position in the heart of Europe, Trieste is one of the most important trade centers for Central Europe and serves as a hub for land and sea transport. The efficient connection to the maritime Silk Road and the continuous expansion of U.N. Ro-Ro traffic ensure further growth potential.

The Rail Cargo Group successfully cooperates with business partners in Italy, such as AlpeAdria, T.O. Delta and U.N. Ro-Ro, thus ensuring smooth and high-quality handling of rail traffic. Its market share of about 50 percent makes the company the number one provider of intermodal and conventional rail logistics services from and to the port of Trieste.
