The Supply Chain Sustainability Index – June 2022

Logistics Manager’s Sustainability Index has been created to showcase (and chart over time) the environmental performance of companies within the UK supply chain – not merely logistics service providers, but their retail and manufacturing partners. It will reveal the detail behind the statistics, including best practice, successful collaborations, key investments and ultimately companies’ progress towards net zero.

This will be delivered in the form of a digital supplement and a webinar series in June 2022.

Environmental sustainability is an issue of critical importance and considerable urgency. It is also a necessity for modern businesses. Although most corporate and public focus has been on the sustainable profile of a product (i.e. its source and whether it is recyclable), the Sustainability Index looks to highlight and understand, among other things, the sustainability issues related to the transportation and distribution of those products.

Supply chains, for most organisations, have a far greater impact on the environment than any other part of their operations. It is no longer sufficient that you are sustainable – your suppliers must also meet the same stringent criteria.

This means it imperative that you work with partners that meet your own benchmarks for sustainable practice, right along the supply chain, from end-to-end. By focusing on the leading companies from a sustainability standpoint, the Sustainability Index provides a comprehensive and valuable resource for other companies to follow their lead.

It is also clear that being sustainable is not only vital for the planet but for long-term business viability. It can reduce costs, make companies more profitable, as well as help the environment. And increasingly consumers want to purchase from sustainable companies and are willing to pay a premium to do so.

Data used in the Sustainability Index, the sustainability metrics, energy usage, carbon emissions (Scopes 1, 2, 3 and soon also 4), etc, has been sourced from companies’ own ESG statements via Companies House. Our expert reporting goes behind the figures to look at how they achieved the figures, what exactly these leading organisations are doing to reduce their impact on the planet, whether that be conservation of resources, elimination of waste, strategies to reduce carbon footprint, financial savings and viability, and social responsibility.

It is a unique piece of reporting and over time will plot the route to net zero for some of the UK’s largest retailers, manufacturers and 3PLs/4PLs and will become an essential guide of who to work with to get to net zero yourself.
