By tradition Austria has a good reputation in the European railway community. In passenger as well as in cargo transport, but also in the railway industry, the country ranks among Europe’s best. Hence within the framework of the Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Rail (OTIF) Austria is making an effort to promote, improve and ease the railway transport, and nominated Mag.a Sylvia Leodolter as an Austrian candidate with great experience in transport policy as the first woman for the office of the Secretary General of the organisation for the period 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2018. The election will take place at the end of September 2015.

OTIF is headquartered in Bern and unites 50 member states in Europe, North Africa and western Asia. The objective of the organisation is to promote, improve and ease the railway transport in every respect. Since 1890, when the Bern Convention was established, the Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Rail (OTIF) has a changeful history, which has always been dominated by men. Now Mag. Sylvia Leodolter runs for the office of the OTIF Secretary General.
