Handling surcharge for transports to Rotterdam with Contargo

Contargo charges congestion surcharge of EUR 15 per container for bookings of river vessels to Rotterdam from the start of August

Due to shortages in container handling in the port of Rotterdam the Contargo container logistics network is to introduce a congestion surcharge. Bookings for scheduled departures of river vessels will be additionally charged with EUR 15 per container, effective from 1 August 2014. With this surcharge the company will finance a concept for more flexible seaport processing. This includes an enlarged fleet and minor utilisation of the existing vessels.

Since mid-April river vessels of the Contargo fleet have to wait longer and longer to be handled at the seaport terminals in Rotterdam. Passage times of 50 hours and peaks of 90 hours were quite common now, influencing the schedules. Passage times had tripled on average. About one fifth of the export containers could not be unloaded at the scheduled terminal due to shortages. They have to be carried by truck to their destination, which requires much effort and costs, the company complains in a press release.

“We have chartered additional vessel capacities, to keep our schedules and we are fighting for our customers and handling dates day by day“, says Marcel Hulsker, managing director, Contargo Waterway Logistics. “To keep the scheduled dates despite the shortages in the port of Rotterdam, we kindly ask our customers to book as early as possible.“ With a yearly throughput of 2 million TEU, Contargo is one of the leading container hinterland logistics networks in Europe. The company integrates container transport between the western seaports, Germany’s North Sea ports and the European hinterland. They operate 25 container terminals in Germany, France, Switzerland and the Czech Republic, as well as seven offices in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Japan. In addition Contargo operates its own vessel and railway liner services.

Their 800 employees generated turnover of about EUR 410 million last year.
