Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo: Growth by internationalisation

Privat railway Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo (WLC) carried 3.2 million tonnes of goods last year; turnover reached EUR 60 million

Three new routes, a new office in Berlin and 3.2 million tonnes of goods moved – Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo GmbH (WLC) presents a positive balance sheet for 2013. At about EUR 60 million annual turnover was EUR 3 million higher than last year’s figure. “Also 3.7 million train kilometres meant an increase on 2012“, the enterprise states in a press release.

In 2013 the private railway enterprise had been concentrating on expanding its own cargo transport operations in Germany: By mid-2013 they started operating the first block trains in own traction. WLC is currently serving the Duisburg – Schwarzheide and  the Ludwigshafen – Schwarzheide routes. In addition they link Duisburg – Vienna – Budapest.

In total the company operates about 145 trains in own traction in Germany per month. The other routes are served in cooperation with partners. To offer this high customer service also in Germany, and respond flexibly to individual customers, they established a new additional WLC branch office in the south of Berlin in July 2013.

Since 2010 the Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo, a subsidiary of the Wiener Lokalbahnen, are operating cargo trains in Central Europe. Starting the first international block train from Enns to Bremerhaven, they continuously expanded their service in the following years. Today WLC provides own traction for about 4,200 block trains per year and serves the routes on the east-west corridor between Romania and Belgium, and on the north-south corridor between the Czech Republic and Italy, or Slovenia, respectively.
