Air cargo growth remains negative for fourth consecutive month

Figures released by Airports Council International (ACI) show that in August freight growth remained in negative territory for the fourth consecutive month.

Total freight declined by 2.2% to 5,187,300 metric tonnes, compared with the same month the previous year. International freight fell 3.6% to 3,467,000 metric tonnes, year on year, whilst domestic freight fell was up 0.6% to 1,647,000 metric tonnes (see  Ti Dashboard – Air Cargo: Global).

For the first eight months of the year total freight was reported 41,781,700 metric tonnes, a 0.2% increase compared to the same preiod the previous year.

A slight improvement for domestic freight in August into positive growth may point to a return to positive international freight growth in the coming months when corresponding period growth also decreased significantly. The on-going uncertainty over sovereign debt issues, health of the banking sector, a cooling economy in China and economic growth in general however does not provide a positive backdrop to the outlook for global air freight.

ACI World’s Economics Director Rafael Echevarne commented, "Air freight does not paint a particularly rosy picture for August. There is almost an across the board slowdown in global freight volume in the year-over-year growth figures (-2.2%). With business confidence eroding in an uncertain economic climate, this sentiment is partly reflected in the freight data. The dramatic deceleration in the evolution of freight traffic over the year puts into question whether we will end the year in positive territory."
