Austria: driving ban for trucks on the third and fourth track

Special signboards of ASFINAG after the border crossings to inform foreign drivers about the new driving bans on motorways in Austria

As of June 1st 2014 in Austria there is a driving ban for trucks over 7.5 tonnes on the third and fourth track of motorways and express roads. This has been concluded unanimously by the National Council on March 27. “Thus, on the far left lanes, there will be no more hazardous overtakings anymore – making motorways safer, “informs the working group of international road transport companies in Austria – Arbeitsgemeinschaft Internationaler StraĂźenverkehrsunternehmer Ă–sterreichs (AISĂ–).

In fact this ban affect only a small part of the road network: from 2,178 kilometers of motorways and expressways in Austria, 700 km have three tracks, at 40 kilometers have four tracks.

ASFINAG is launching a campaign to inform freight carriers and truck drivers about this novelty. ASFINAG will place dedicated signboards in German, English and the language of the relevant neighboring country at motorways and express roads after the border crossings to Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Italy and Germany. In addition, all truck toll customers and special transportation companies will be sent a relevant informative note. The information will also be showed on the displays on the motorway.
