Austria’s transport industry lacks 8,000 to 10,000 skilled workers

The economic development of the domestic transport sector is on the rise. Both the demand data and the prospects for the business situation of the near future are more positive than in the first three monghts of this year. This becomes visible in the survey conducted by the professional group for tansport of the Austrian Economic Chamber on the second quarter of the year 2017, the results of which were presented on 12 June in Vienna.

“This shows that the increasing exchange of goods in the course of the noticeable international economic upturn is also arriving in Austria’s enterprises,” said Chairman Alexander Klacska to journalists. The order volume reached a 5-years peak, which also means a positive price development.

What is particularly pleasing, is that jobs were created again for the first time since 2014. The employment expectation has also been turned into a positive one again after a long time. The companies in the domestic transport sector want to hire more employees again.

At the same time, however, the lack of skilled staff is increasing and becomes the number one business hurdle in the transport industry. According to Alexander Klacska, the overwhelming bureaucracy was the main reason for the need of 8,000 to 10,000 skilled workers: “Our employees have to carry out bureaucratic tasks on a permanent basis, they are controlled exactly to the second and sanctioned by the minute hand, which makes the pursuit of this profession not quite attractive and slows down the positive momentum in the industry. The government should reduce this bureaucratic jungle with sense and tolerance “.
